The oil content of the samples varied in a relatively small range between 5.4 g/100 g and 9.9 g/100 g. The main fatty acids of cactus seed oil are oleic acid (20.5 g/100 g) and linoleic acid (62.3...
The cactus seed oil is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids . The oil content of seeds from variety O. ficus-indica (prickly pears) varies from 5.0% to 14.4% according to the Turkish varieties Ortaören or Eskioba .
The main fatty acids of cactus seed oil are oleic acid (20.5g/100g) and linoleic acid (62.3g/100g) representing 80–84% of the total fatty acids. The main component of the tocopherol fraction is...
From the seeds of a cactus fruit comes the most absorbable botanical oil on the market, 100% organic Opuntia Seed Oil, infused with delicate bouquets of Geranium Bourbon, Neroli, Spanish Sage & more, and bursting with bio-active aromas designed to promote the health and healing of skin, body, and mind.
The seed of 11 commercial cactus pear cultivars were analyzed for oil content and fatty acid composition. The oil content was relatively low, with a very low palmitic acid content of between 11.4 and 15.9%, considerably lower than that of cotton oil. Linoleic acid content varied between 61.4 and 68.9%. The α-linolenic acid of all the cultivars was less than 1%. The oleic acid content varied between 12.4 and 16.5% (lower than that of cotton seed).
research studies have been carried recently reported the chemical composition of seeds oil of O. ficus indica. However little information was found in the literature concerning the fatty acids profile of O. dillenii seeds oil. Salvo et al. reported that oil content from Italian cultivar was about 9.14%. Moreover, Ramadan and
Oil cactus pear (Opuntia ficus-indica L.) Abstract. Seeds and pulp of cactus pear (Opuntia ficus-indica L.) were compared in terms of fatty acids, lipid classes, sterols, fat-soluble vitamins and β-carotene. Total lipids (TL) in lyophilised seeds and pulp were 98.8 (dry weight) and 8.70 g/kg, respectively.
Prickly Pear Cactus Seed Oil. Prickly Pear Cactus Seed Oil is also known as Barbary Fig Oil, Prickly Pear Oil or Cactus Seed Oil. These are all names for the oil pressed from seeds of the Opuntia Ficus Indica cactus. It takes 1000Kg of raw cactus fruit makes just one litre / 34 fl oz of oil.

The levels of lipid classes in cactus pear seed and pulp oils and fatty acid profile of these classes are shown in Table 1.Among the TL present in the seeds, a significant amount of NL was found (87.0% of TL), while polar lipids were recovered at higher levels in pulp oil (52.9% of TL).
Seven South African cactus pear varieties of Opuntia ficus indica and O. robusta were evaluated for seed oil content, fatty acid composition and oil quality. Oil quality parameters included refractive index, iodine value, peroxide value, free fatty acid content, p‐anisidine value and oxidative stability index. Cultivars had oil contents ranging between 5.65% and 8.09%.
Oil content and main constituents of cactus seed oils Opuntia Ficus Indica of different origin in Morocco. Mediterranean Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism 2015, 8, 85-92. DOI: 10.3233/MNM-150036. Anna Della Corte, Giulia Chitarrini, Iole Maria Di Gangi, Domenico Masuero, Evelyn Soini, Fulvio Mattivi, Urska Vrhovsek.
Oil extracted from Opuntia ficus‐indica seeds constituted 13.6% of the whole seed. Results of the physical and chemical analyses of the oil for refractive index, iodine number, saponification number, Reichert‐Meissl number, Hehner value, acid value and unsaponifiable matter compared well with the characteristics of other commonly consumed vegetable oils.
Cactus pear seed oil has quite an extraordinary oil profile. It is one of the few liquid oils with a relatively low content of oleic acid. Its main component is the linoleic acid and it has a medium content of palmitic acid (a constituent of our skin barrier). The exciting fact about this oil is not its fatty acid spectrum however.
The main fatty acids of prickly pear seed oil were C16:0, C18:0, C18:1, C18:2. With an exceptional level of linoleic acid, up to 70%, the content of unsaturated fatty acids was high, at 88.5% and 88.0% for O. ficus indica and O. stricta, respectively.
The fatty acid composition of the seed oils from the Opuntia ficus-indica is given in Table 3. In many plants, the seed oil composition differs from those of the lipids in photosynthetic tissue. As usual for the fatty acid composition in prickly pear seeds, there is a wide variation in fatty acid composition . The cactus seed oil contained fatty acids common to seed oils, including saturated fatty acids (palmitic and stearic), and unsaturated fatty acids (oleic, vaccenic and linoleic).
Opuntia Ficus Indica, commonly known as Prickly Pear or Barbary Fig Seed Oil is a relatively new oil in the beauty world – but be ready, cause this oil is going to take the beauty world by storm. Prickly Pear Oil benefits the skin with it’s exceptional hydrating, and anti-aging properties.
